The symposium focusses on the cumulative impacts of natural and human-induced factors on the site’s Outstanding Universal Value (OUV). The event aims to contribute to a broader understanding of these influences and their implications for management and policy. Hereto, the most recent insights with respect to pillars of the Wadden Sea’s OUV and transition paths towards sustainability within the Wadden region will be exchanged and discussed. Its findings will inform the Trilateral Governmental Conference in early 2026 in Denmark.
Due to the high level of interest in the Symposium, an online stream of all lectures will be provided. The link will be published on the event website, accessible to everyone.
This ISWSS is organised by the Waddenacademie and the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat, on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN).
Anne-Marie Rasmussen, as Chair of the Wadden Sea Board, and Arno Brok, as Chair of the Dutch Wadden Region Environmental Council, will give the opening speeches of the symposium.
Keynotes are given by Prof. Helle Tegner Anker (University of Copenhagen) on the EU Nature Restoration Law, Dr. Arend Kolhoff (Netherlands Commission for Environmental Assessment) on Strategic Environmental Assessment, and Dr. Dennis Wilken (Kiel University) on historical cultural landscape reconstruction in the North Frisian Wadden Sea.
The symposium will be hosted by Sascha Klöpper (Executive Secretary Common Wadden Sea Secretariat) and Katja Philippart (Director Waddenacademie). “Understanding how multiple stressors impact the Wadden Sea ecosystem is key for developing sustainable solutions,” they say. “This symposium provides a platform to connect Wadden Sea science and scientists to jointly explore how natural values and socioeconomic transitions in this area can strengthen each other.”
